A Guide to Webhosting for Newbies – A Beginning
Welcome back! As I promised last week, I am starting a series of posts about web hosting services for the newbie. These are designed with the newbie in mind, but the information is pertinent for anyone with questions about web hosting.
With that said, let’s dive in:
As we all know the Internet is make up of millions of individual websites. These websites can range from online shopping to photo sharing, social networking to government related information. Pretty much anyone can get ‘online’ today check their bank account balance or chat with a friend or relative on the other side of the world, or post a photo of something they did today. They can read the news and check their local TV listings.
The ‘bigger’, more popular websites are more than likely housed on a dedicated server or servers and hosted ‘in house’. Smaller websites will probably use a different type of web hosting. In this series, I am going to cover the basic information that a newbie is going to need to make a decision on which web hosting company to choose for their website.
In a nutshell, the hosting company will provide the ’space’ needed for your site. Think of this as being similar to the hard drive space on your own computer. You have thousands, if not millions, of files on your computer and these files are stored on your hard drive. That drive has a limited amount of space to store those files. The same goes for your web hosting company. They have servers that have hard disk space in them and you are going to pay them for a certain amount of space to store your website files on.
The hosting company will also provide you with ‘bandwidth’. Think of this as the number of people who are going to be visiting your site. This number will be either in the megabytes, or in the case of a semi-busy site, in gigabytes, all depending on the package that you purchase.
At this point, I don’t want you to get caught up in a lot of the technical stuff about hosting because I will touch on some of that and explain it as we go along. You do need to know this; if you are at all wanting to have some sort of ’space’ for friends, family, customers, to come and electronically visit, you need webhosting, whether it be free or paid.
Some of the things I will be going over in this series will be:
The types of webhosting and the differences
What to look for in a web host
Working with cPanel
How to point your domain name to your webhost
Getting your website up and online
Alrighty…there’s a beginning for you. Stay tuned for the next posting…and if it’s easier, you can sign up for my newsletter to be notified each time I post, or you can follow me on twitter.
